Ministry of Tourism organizes Workshop on Promoting Tourism Through Legends and Folk Tales

The Ministry of Tourism organized a workshop entitled “Innovative Ideas to Serve the tourism sector”, in a cooperation with the Re-search Council at the Ministry of Tourism as part of the research pro-ject collecting Omani legends and folk tales associated with tour-ism sites. The workshop witnessed the participation of researchers, students of tourism department in colleges and universities, and en-trepreneurs of small and medium-sized enterprises.
The workshop had offered the participants a platform to bring ef-fective strategies to market and promote these stories as well as exploring creative commercial ideas.
The workshop included several activities like- a summary presenta-tion on the project, detailed presentation of some legends and folk tales, some related audio recordings and photos, and a presenta-tion of the researcher’s experiences in sites. Additionally, the partic-ipants were engaged in a brainstorming activity where they had to study some legends and folk tales. The Ministry’s representatives summarized the crucial and commercial ideas that can be used to promote the project. The main researchers of the project played a vital role to present the stories and to facilitate the conversations among groups at the workshop.
It is worth mentioning that the project is the first time of its kind in Oman as it is directed to collecting as many legends and folk tales as possible from both Al Batinah North and A’Sharqiyah North Governorates. The aim of the project is to employ the cultural as-pects as attraction sources to the tourism sites and to preserve the Omani heritage. It was agreed that the project will involve the rest of governorates in the Sultanate in the coming years.
The research of the project relied mainly on the folk tales found from available audio, and video sources, as well as interviewing cit-izens who took part and witnessed the stories’ events.  The following process after confirming the availability of the stories’ conditions was for the researchers to write and direct these stories to look like a unique cultural and tourism product.
The project was put forward by the Ministry of Tourism in a coopera-tion with The Research Council to collect, codify and classify these stories, and to record what narrators tell about the tourism places. The research succeeded to collect a notable number of legends and folk tales that narrators from Al Batinah North and A’Sharqiyah North Governorates told.
As the Ministry of Tourism and The Research Council are keen to de-velop the tourism sector of the Sultanate, this project plays a major role to enhance the cultural aspects of the tourists and visitors, as well as adding an extra value to the tourism industry in the Sultan-ate.
